I’ve ridden horses for most of my life, but never had my own. It wasn’t until 2014 that I finally had the opportunity to have my own horse, following a four-year break from the saddle.
For the last two years I have been mainly focusing on trying to force my muscles to be more flexible, and quashing my ever-growing awareness of my mortality. Additionally, I try to balance horses with a demanding full-time job which requires a substantial amount of travel, and a much less demanding partner!
The purpose of this blog is to document my journey into the wonderful world of eventing – so that I can monitor my own progress, but also to show others just starting out the highs, lows and everything-in-betweens of eventing. Hopefully I can inspire confidence in others to give things a go and not to be afraid of a few failures along the way!
Paddy’s Cruising (Paddy)
Paddy (Arkle Cruise X Olympic Lux) is a 2010 ISH with exceptional breeding, having both Lux Z and Cruising in his bloodlines.
This makes him both extremely talented, and extremely clever – he needs to be kept on his toes, and he’s certainly keeping me on mine!
When I bought him he had competed to 1.10m as a showjumper, with very little else done – so together we will have lots of fun exploring new realms in Dressage and XC together, and ultimately getting out Eventing!
Carigeen Floss (Betsey)
‘Betty’ is a 2004 year old Irish Sports Horse who I had on loan from her wonderful owners between 2014-2016. While her breeding is not recorded, I firmly believe she is a Connemara x ID.
Over the two years I had her, Betsey gave me endless fun and confidence, helping me to complete my first One Day Event, qualify for the Dressage Ireland National Championships in just two outings, and was forgiving enough to allow me to learn from my mistakes along the way. She has now gone to a wonderful new home where she will give lots of confidence and fun to her new owner, and I still keep in touch.
